Phoenicians were very popular for trading. Everyone else who traded did not know where to go. When the Phoenicians traded they had a secret no one else knew about. When traveling the Phoenicians used the North Star(Pole Star). The Pole Star was a star that was the brightest star in the sky. It helped people in the past to know what direction they were traveling. The Phoenicians mostly traded with Greek. Phoenicians started trading in 1000 B.E.C. through 600 B.C.E.
When the Phoenicians traveled, they traveled by ships. The ships were big, the length was four times as long as it was wide. The length was between 65 and 100 feet and the width was about 20. If the route was short and they were receiving or giving a small amount of goods, the Phoenicians would take only 10 to 15 men. The men would use rafts instead of ships for a short route. The Phoenicians had the perfect location for trading. It was centered between civilizations on land and central stopping point by water. Things that were produced and traded were cedar and pine wood, cloth, dyes(specifically purple), metalwork, glass, and pottery. The most popular goods the Phoenicians traded was wine, salt and fish. In return, the Phoenicians received papyrus, ivory, silk, spices, horses, gold, silver and precious jewels. |
